![]() Unless you have done a lot of upper body training, your sticking point will be the jerk, ie: you can clean a lot more than you can jerk. The problem with having to always start these movements off the floor is when your weak point is the jerk. Benefits to Jerk Blocks vs Lifting From the Floorīoth the snatch and the clean-and-jerk, the two olympic weightlifting movements, are done off the floor. The key is you want a little vertical room so you can avoid hitting the blocks on the dip portion of the jerk. A 5ft tall lifter might need less than 35″. A 6ft tall lifter might go up to about 40″ high if that’s possible with the available setup. Big wide blocks give you tons of room, and on the downside they get pretty heavy to move.Īll jerk blocks have lips on the front and back top edges to stop the barbell from rolling off.Īs far as the height, around 35″ is a typical height that accommodates the large majority of lifters well enough. A 20-24″ width is good to fit a few bumper plates with room to drop them a little off-center as well. A 30-40″ length is good to give you extra room front to back when dropping. The top surface of jerk blocks varies a little between brands. Jerk Block Dimensions typical jerk block dimensions When you have the option to set the blocks much lower, they become pulling blocks, which are more versatile for extra exercises and which I’ll be going over later in this article. BarBend has an article on how behind-the-neck jerks using blocks can help with strongman sticking points. Bumper plates are the only type of plates used on jerk blocks, due to the required impact absorption to prevent damage.Īside from jerks, due to the height of jerk blocks there isn’t much more you can do with them besides overhead barbell movements such as push presses and strict military presses. They are not common in home gyms, and they aren’t even found in most Crossfit affiliates or other commercial gyms. They have been used for decades in olympic weightlifting as a specialty item, meant for competitive lifters to isolate and improve their jerk. ![]() They put you in position to practice the jerk portion of a clean-and-jerk repeatedly, dropping the barbell back onto the platform. Parents feed the fledglings for 56 days, then another 4-6 weeks after leaving the nest. It is usual for a small community of birds( that is 2 families) to be in the same area. Both parents share the nest duties, usually 2 eggs are laid with a 30-day incubation period. The site is well chosen, usually 6-8 metres from the ground with a clear view of the hollow entry with a branch close by ,acting as a watch out position. They come to the lower grounds and find or return to the same large ‘live hollow’ year after year. Gang Gangs breed between October to January. Before too long ,I found myself talking to them. They are unlike the other cockatoos who can separate the seeds from the pods in their beak. Forever chomping away at the gumnuts, holding the foliage in their left foot to eat. I would look up and there they would be perched in their favourite tree. In the afternoons I would hear the ‘creaky door ‘greeting and smell the eucalyptus and feel and see the chewed gumnuts and branches gently fall to the ground. But with the 2019-2020 fires, their food source was destroyed. ![]() Insects and sawfly larvae are also included in their diet. They also enjoy some introduced species of Hawthorn bushes, Cotoneaster, liquid amber and cypresses. They eat over 200 types of native bushes, seeds, fruits and cones, of mainly wattles and eucalyptus species. They live in the mountains and hills during the summer months and travel to the lower ground over the winter and spring period. However, the 2019 -2020 bushfires scorched and decimated their habitat of South Eastern Australian. The bird emblem of the Australian Capital Territory is the Gang Gang Cockatoo. I want to protect and assist these little birds to survive. Maureen didn’t win, but I know we did win, as we both got to talk about the Gang Gangs. She drew an amazing portrait of me and entered the portrait in the local ‘Archies’ exhibition. During this time Maureen took my photo while I was counting the gang gangs for ‘Birdata’. Maureen would sit quietly waiting for them to arrive. Maureen Harley, a friend and a talented photographer and artist, was also smitten with these funny little birds. I told my friends and they came to experience what I had been so lucky to see. Yes, ‘Gang Gang this’ and ‘Gang Gang that’. Pretty soon that’s all I could talk about. With the trademark ‘creaky door’ greeting ,I was overwhelmed by their presence. Up until August a small flock of 15-20 Gang Gangs would arrive in my back yard every evening between 4-5 pm. ![]() I immediately enrolled.įrom the first sighting of the Gang Gang in April ,I fell in love. I wasn’t ready for that! I also noted that Bird Australia had a ‘Gang Gang Cockatoo Recovery e-learning Course’ to help us learn about how we can help these little birds to survive. After the fires, a further 10% decline in numbers was expected. Gang Gang Cockatoos have had a 69% decline in their population over a 30-year period prior to the 2019 -2020 bushfires. I visited the Bird Australia website to read more about these funny little birds. I also knew that they had recently been listed as a threatened species, but I really didn’t know that much more about this little bird. I also knew that they were more an inland bird, up in the foothills. I had heard of people seeing this little fellow but more as an infrequent visitor along these coastal plains. I have lived here all my life and I can never remember seeing this little bird, but I instantly recognised the Gang Gang Cockatoo. Back on the 24th April 2022, I looked out my kitchen window and saw this little bird. ![]() A subscription will remove the usage limitation for free users, allow for faster uploading, and also grant access to the exclusive, offline desktop app. You can work with PDF, Word, Excel, or PPT files.įor those who actively deal with digital paperwork every day, do check if you and your team could benefit from a Pro account. If you’ve seen the Netflix series Stranger Things, this layer kind of looks like the Demogorgan’s head. First, carefully slice open the gizzard and remove all the grit and the thick layer holding them. ![]() This organ takes a little bit of prep work before its ready for the fryer. The gizzard is a big, firm ball that’s full of pebbles or gravel (known as grit) and helps the turkey digest its food. Carefully slice into the bottom of the body cavity (below the breast bone) and then reach up and grab the gizzard, heart, and liver. ![]() I do this part last so I don’t get any guts on the other cuts of meat. The Giblets Clockwise: The gizzard, liver, and heart from a wild turkey. There’s a surprising amount of meat on the wings, and they’re worth working on if you’ve got the time and determination. My turkey hunting buddy Josh Dahlke has perfected a wild turkey buffalo wing recipe that’s definitely worth trying. I once tried to sous vide the wings for six hours and then fry them … and even then they were too tough to enjoy (though the flavor was great). What you’ll end up with what looks like over-sized chicken wings, but unfortunately you can’t cook them like oversized chicken wings. Pluck off the small feathers and use your knife to cut away the big primary feathers. Separate these two sections by popping the joint and cutting through it and then get to plucking and skinning. Imagine the two types of the chicken wings you get at a bar-the drumette (which is shaped like a drumstick) and the flat or wingette (two little bones and meat in the middle). Now, you can separate the two parts of the wing. After you’ve removed the breast meat, pop the wing joint by pushing it away from the body (similar to how you did with the thigh) and cut the wing off the body. I’ll be honest: the wings take a good amount of work. The Wings Wild turkey wings actually hold a surprising amount of meat, but it takes some work to get to them. When you find the soft spot in the joint, cut through it and the two pieces will come apart. Then bend the drumstick backward and feel for the middle of the joint with the tip of your knife. First cut through the meat on the back of the joint, the line that separates the drumstick from the thigh will be obvious-just cut along that line. Separate the the drumstick from the thigh by cutting through the knee joint. (Read our review of the best hunting knives, here.) It’s more like filleting a fish than quartering a deer. The breastbone has curves and angles that you need to work the blade around. You don’t want to use your thick deer hunting knife for this job. The key to leaving no meat on the bone is to use an ultra-sharp, flexible blade. But not everybody gets all the breast meat they should. Natalie KrebsĮveryone takes the breast meat from their turkeys. With large toms, it’s worth slicing each breast in half before freezing. The Breast Here are two wild turkey breasts, freshly removed from a bird. The liver, of course, has more of an iron taste. Heart and gizzard meat are pretty similar (rich and a little chewy, in a good way) when fried and dunked in hot sauce. The giblets consist of the gizzard, heart, and liver. But if you go through the trouble of harvesting turkey wings, you’ll be rewarded with surprisingly meaty cuts that can be served up in a killer buffalo wing recipe. Wild turkey wings are often overlooked, mostly because they are a hassle to pluck and clean. The breasts and legs (meaning drumsticks and thighs) are the most popular cuts and you can see how to remove them in the video above. After eating one of the Levain cookies, I knew it was my duty to create a make at home version of the Levain Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookie. Many of you have been to Levain, and NEED this recipe. Unless they leave the cookies on the plane. If you have a friend visiting NYC, having them hand deliver cookies is a sweet option. The shipping is what increases the price of the cookies. I don’t ever recall eating cookie that was worth $35 per cookie. Did you just pass out? I’ve eaten a lot of cookies in my lifetime. Last, but not least, next day (early) delivery is $108.50 or $34.94 PER COOKIE. The next option is $81.50 for next day air, which is about $27 per cookie. The least expensive shipping option (to Utah, 2 day air) will set you back approx $64 or about $16 per cookie. And who wants to wait 2 days when they have a chocolate chip cookie craving? Levain cookies are sold four to a package in the smallest package available. Reason 4. Affordability of shipping: The mail order option, in my opinion, is not very affordable for most people. Location- If you don’t live in NYC, (and who does?) I mean, only about 8 million people, but most of them don’t read this blog, which brings us to the out-of-towner option, having the cookies shipped. But when you consider you can make 8 at home for about a dollar per cookie, the make at home option starts to look very attractive. So one cookie or two or three are affordable. Four dollars a cookie is a reasonable price, given the size of the cookie. Reason 2. Cost- At $4 per cookie, if I lived in NYC and could run down the street to buy a cookie whenever I had a craving, it would be an easy choice. They are delicious- See all of the above reasons. Why recreate the Levain Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookie? New Yorkers faithfully stand in the Levain line, patiently waiting for their cookie fix. Anything with a long line in NYC= (usually) an experience you don’t want to miss. Hype: New Yorkers love to wait in line! No really. The cookie is baked at a high temperature, and mounded high, allowing the outside of the cookie to crisp up perfectly while the middle barely gets baked and creates puddles of chocolate in the cookie dough. Texture: Perfect combination of crisp outside and incredibly gooey center. The Levain cookies deliver in both the size and deliciousness categories! I’ve purchased big cookies in the past, only to be disappointed that the flavor didn’t match up to the size of the cookie. If you are forking out $4 per cookie (price in 2016 when this post originally went live), you want a cookie you can sink your teeth into. Everything is is big and flamboyant in NYC, and Levain cookies are no exception. Why is the Levain Chocolate Chip Cookie so popular? |
